My name is Centurion Bikcin and I'm a media student presenting at a virtual worlds conference in California about celebrities in Second Life. I would like to ask a you few questions about celebrityhood in SL and how you chose the physical appearance of your avatar.
1. Does your avatar resemble your real life self? If not, how is it different?
Yes it does. The only difference really is that my avatar is much shapelier.
2. Would you ever experiment further with strange skin colors or other apperances non-typical of celebrities in real life?
Sure!
3. Do you have any friends and/or colleagues who have chosen to make their avatars different from their actual self?
Yes I do.
4. There's so much pressure for celebrities in real life to be thin/muscular. When you were deciding about making your avatar did you consider making your avatar extra thin/muscular?
Of course!
5. Since celebrities in real life often have pressure to continually update their appearance, do you think that you will need to regularly update your avatar or would you rather have a signature look that remains the same?
I have a signature look that I will have remain the same. It is as close to my personal appearance as I can get and do not want to change.
6. How about getting older? Do you think that you'll want your avatar to age with you?
Absolutely not! Why get old if I don't have to.
7. Does your avatar try to fulfill the same standards of physical beauty that traditional Hollywood, or other venues, consider marketable and likely to facilitate fame?
I do not think a SL celebrity's avatar facilitates fame, at least as far as SL live music is concerned. Here, everyone can be gorgeous so that isn't what attracts an SL audience. What makes a SL celebrity famous is their ability to entertain and that can come from personality and talent alone.
8. What kinds of ways do you try to get exposure and publicity in Second life? How is it different from real life?
I answer questions from reporters if I am asked. I send out promo packages with pictures, website info, music information, etc. to those folks that stage me at their venues.
9. How has your career changed since having an avatar in Second Life?
I went from being a part time paralegal outside of the home to being a full time musician and I do not work outside of the home anymore.
10. What do you think about the conventional means of attaining celebrity compared to that of SL? Do you feel conventional means of celebrity in the real world are limited?
Yes I do believe that conventional means of attaining celebrity are limited in the real world. The real world only gets to see those celebrities that are backed with enough money to market them. In SL, celebrity status comes from the ability of the celebrity to entertain, not from how much money he/she has or what they look like or who is backing them.
11. Do you think virtual reality will enable people of more diverse backrounds to become celebrities to a greater extent than their opportunities in the real world?
Absolutely ! I am a prime example of that. SL has given me the opportunity to showcase my talents where I would not have that opportunity in the real world due to economic constraints, age, etc. Also, SL provides a platform to collaborate on a global scale. For instance, my original songs are composed by me but the music played to back them is performed and recorded by people from other countries and other states in the US. So a piano player from Denmark gets exposure all around the world because of my singing and because of SL. Neither of us could dream of having these oportunities in the real world.
Well thats all the questions I had. Thank You for taking the time to help my research. If your at the virtual conference, I'll see you there. willbradford04@gmail.com

OhMy Kidd Interview
I'm a student and I will be presenting at a virtual worlds conference in LA next year about Celebrities in Second Life. Would it be okay to ask you a few questions about being a celebrity and how you chose your avatar?
Thanks, imagine being called a SL celebrity lol. I've enjoyed answering your questions. Music and SL are both fun from me.
1. Does your avatar resemble your real life self? If not, how is it different?
My avatar is of similar body type and ethnicity to my RL body, but is taller, more muscular, and has different hair colour. Oh and much younger.
2. Would you ever experiment further with strange skin colors or other apperances non-typical of celebrities in real life?
Well I do like to be a frog sometimes but thats just for fun when I am relaxing. One of the great features of SL is that you can change your body almost instantly. I would try (almost) anything if I had a reason e.g. for a themed event or a photo shoot. I expect I will always have a regular avatar that is at least semi-realistic.
3. There's so much pressure for celebrities in real life to be thin/muscular. When you were deciding about making your avatar did you consider making extra thin/muscular?
My avatar is less thin and more muscular than my RL body. I shoudl tell you how I got my avatar. At one of my early performances I befriended a woman who liked my music. As we were talking she said something like "if you're gonna be a star you better do something 'bout that avatar" (a line I like so much I'm still trying to write a song about it). She gave me LMs where I could get good free shapes and demos, and said to get in touch if I needed help. Took me a while, but eventually I had a bit more fo a clue, and one night we spent about 90 minutes shopping and there I was. I keep that look as an outfit, and often return to it before trying new things on. She said she has helped other musos the same way, too.
4. Since celeberities in real life often have pressure to continually update their appearance, do you think that you will need to regularly update your avatar or would you rather have a signature look that remains the same?
I can see a need to keep my "act" fresh, musically first and foremost but also in other aspects. So far I occasionally get new clothes or the odd accessory. I might be ready for a new shape and skin one day, who knows?
5. How about getting older? Do you think that you'll want your avatar to age with you?
I don't think I would deliberately try to age my avatar over time. I could use an older avatar, sure, when that worked.
6. Do you have any friends and/or colleagues who have chosen to make their avatars different from their actual self?
The friends who introduced me to SL have unusual avatars with unnatural colours etc. - human like aliens.
7. How has your career changed since having an avatar in Second Life?
I am answering this in terms of how SL has affected my musical activities - a hobby for me not a career.
My performances are squarely centred in the style I have played at parties and social gatherings throughout my life up to now, and occasionally played in small public venues, mostly quite a long time ago.
SL music has re-focussed my attention on songwriting, acoustic guitar, and solo performance skills. I've also had to get very organised to keep track of SL bookings across the timezones.
8. What do you think about the conventional means of attaining celebrities compared to that of SL? Do you feel conventional means of celebrity in real world are limited?
LOL. Well I guess in RL clelebrity status is bestowed, mediated and managed by the very industries which profit from it, big money is involved, and there are reasonably wel lestablished pathways. SL is a lot more "playful" - we're all in it for the fun.
9.What kinds of ways do you try to get exposure and publicity in Second life? How is it different from real life?
gig guide, word of mouth - pretty much like RL
networking= developing and using groups, this is more different.
11. Do you think virtual reality will enable people of more diverse backrounds to become celebrities to a greater extent than their opportunities in the real world?
Yes.
12. Do you think that the big corporate record companies will try to swoop in and get control of SL?
No.

[22:45] You: Hi
[22:46] Satan: Hi Centurion
[22:46] You: I'm a student and I will be presenting at a virtual worlds conference in LA next year about Celebrities in Second Life. Would it be okay to ask you a few questions about how you promote celbrities in Second Life?
[22:47] Tina Knibber: sorry, i crashed
[22:48] Tina Knibber: away? i see you are in the Avvy Fanclub
[22:48] You: Yes, I've been researching celebrities in SL and was lucky enough to conduct an interview with Avvy
[22:49] Tina Knibber: nice guy, its a old frirend
[22:49] Tina Knibber: friend
[22:50] You: I'm a student and I will be presenting at a virtual worlds conference in LA next year about Celebrities in Second Life.
[22:50] Tina Knibber: i see
[22:50] You: Would it be okay to ask you a few questions about being a celebrity and how you promotes celebrities in Second Life?
[22:51] Tina Knibber: well, yes .. although i would not consider myself to be a celectrity lol
[22:51] You: Oh:)
[22:52] Tina Knibber: i only have this little record company so i know some musicians
[22:53] You: When promoting clients do you advise them to make avatars that look like themselves?
[22:54] Tina Knibber: i never advise anyone to look in a special way ... who cares what you look like .. ppl really only want good music
[22:54] Tina Knibber: anyway .. musicians always look like himans .. only a few look strange
[22:55] Tina Knibber: basically there is a difference bewteen those who want to get famous in here, and those who already are populat outside
[22:56] Tina Knibber: those outside try to add their SL presecnce to an existing image always look like in real
[22:56] Tina Knibber: at least close hihi
[22:56] You: Cause they already have a fanbase right?
[22:57] You: What are the most typical methods of promoting artist in Second Life?
[22:57] Tina Knibber: yep .. take U2 for exaample .. they did not persorm as dwarfs
[22:57] Tina Knibber: typical ..
[22:57] Tina Knibber: hm
[22:57] You: your right!
[22:57] Tina Knibber: playing live is promotion number one
[22:57] Tina Knibber: thats the only thing that counts
[22:57] Tina Knibber: apart from that:
[22:58] Tina Knibber: spread shirts or scripted gadgets with artist name on it
[22:58] Tina Knibber: and:
[22:58] Tina Knibber: place their names on key location
[22:59] You: Do you mean like billboards and posters?
[22:59] Tina Knibber: one important way is to spread links to artist homepages like myspace
[22:59] Tina Knibber: yes
[22:59] Tina Knibber: look behind
[23:00] Tina Knibber: over here
[23:00] Tina Knibber: this is a band i promote in here
[23:00] Tina Knibber: AVATAR
[23:02] Tina Knibber: sorry, crashed again
[23:02] You: Awesome!
[23:02] You: not that you crashed:)
[23:03] Tina Knibber: they do not have a homepage yet .. but if: imagine one of the posters to be a link to a internet homepage like myspace ..
[23:03] Tina Knibber: this can attract ppl to come to a concert when they see the name on event calender
[23:03] Tina Knibber: but in the end: the concert is important
[23:04] You: I totally agree that the concert is the most important being a concert goer myself. It's all about having that direct conncetion to your audience
[23:04] You: Do you think virtual reality will enable people of more diverse backrounds to become celebrities to a greater extent than their opportunities in the real world?
[23:05] Tina Knibber: what you mean with dverse backrounds?
[23:06] Tina Knibber: it easier and cheaper to play infront of many ppl i SL with a computer and a guitar at home
[23:06] Cylindrian Rutabaga is Offline
[23:06] Tina Knibber: this of course is easier than travelling around and play in RL in many clubs and cities
[23:06] Tina Knibber: so: yes
[23:07] You: yes, thats what I was getting at. I think it creates more opportunies to reach people in many different locations!
[23:07] Tina Knibber: ... and probably diferent cultures
[23:08] Tina Knibber: SL has a large Latin community .. like this band is from argentina
[23:08] Tina Knibber: i never met someone from argentina
[23:08] Tina Knibber: and not their music
[23:08] Tina Knibber: not i do know it a little
[23:09] You: Must be an exciting time to be in the cutting edge of the music industry
[23:09] Tina Knibber: this is not the cutting edge of music industry .. it an alternative

[22:58] Tina Knibber: place their names on key location
[22:59] You: Do you mean like billboards and posters?
[22:59] Tina Knibber: one important way is to spread links to artist homepages like myspace

[23:10] Tina Knibber: hehe
[23:11] You: Well, thank you for answering my questions. Its to get some responses from the promoting end
[23:11] You: really great
[23:12] Tina Knibber: youre a stundent?
[23:12] Tina Knibber: student?
[23:12] Tina Knibber: what subject? marketing? culture? media?
[23:13] You: Yes, I'm a graduated student in NYC and I'm presenting at a virtual worlds conference next year about celebrities in second life
[23:14] Tina Knibber: the AVATAR guys are really famous ... to those who like hard rock and Latin Americans
[23:14] Tina Knibber: speak to MAURO BENDER if you want to know how it feels to be here as a band
[23:15] You: That would be a great opportunity to add to my reseach!
[23:15] Tina Knibber: Mauro Bender ... he is the singer ... just send him an IM .. he is not online right now ... did you speak to KIM SEIFERT?
[23:16] You: No, but I'd like to
[23:17] Tina Knibber: KIM is a real clebrity ... daily concerts, a magazine, lot of groups .. busy woman
[23:17] Tina Knibber: she is a key figure in SL msuic life
[23:17] You: How can get in touch with her to ask for an interview?
[23:18] Tina Knibber: she is always very busy .. so: get in touch with her Manager "Gavin Mackay"
[23:18] Tina Knibber: Gavin Mackay makes her TimeTable
[23:18] Tina Knibber: :)
[23:19] You: Thank You so much for those contacts! I just started researching on Friday so a lot of it is still new to me
